Last night, women all over America got together with their girlfriends and went to the movies. I was among the hundreds that did this at my local theatre with my girlfriends, Ana, Agueda, Dona and Vanessa. We met up early and bought our tickets before walking over to a restaurant across the shopping center from the theatre. We were not alone, there were many tables at the restaurant filled with twenty and thirty-something women drinking cosmopolitans and laughing with their friends.
At 9pm we left to go back to the theatre to try and find seats before the movie started at 9:30. By the time we got into the theatre we ended up in the 4th row from the front, and the theatre looked an awful lot like my trip to CKU back in March where there were approximately 300 women and 2 men attending. In the large full theatre, I saw maybe 10 men and they truly all looked like they'd been tricked into going, or their wives had just begged them to go so they wouldn't have to go alone. With all the laughing and talking in the theatre we started to speculate if we'd even hear the movie once it started!
For a fan of the tv show, this movie is a must see! It's adorable. The characters are as lovable as they were when we left them. The audience in the theatre were definitely fans, and many times during the movie you could hear clapping or cheering or a chorus of "Awww"s. We all love these women and we all have friends who encapsulate a Carrie, or a Miranda, a Charlotte, or maybe even a Samantha, and we all wish we lived their fabulous lives. But at the heart of it, we just identify with these female friendships that grow with us as we grow and who stand by us through college and careers, relationships and marriages and wedding drama and buying homes and having children. My friends that I was with last night, most of them I have known for almost 20 years and just like Carrie and her friends we have ups and downs. We sometimes create drama. But we never decide to just walk away because of how much these friendships add to our lives, how valuable they are, especially when we need them the most. This movie celebrates girlfriends, and I loved every minute of it! Ana, Agueda, Dona and Vanessa, thank you for going with me last night, I had a wonderful time!
Hey, let's do brunch soon!
